Thieves Key on Hack That Leaves Hyundai, Kia Cars Vulnerable

DETROIT (AP) — Some Hyundai and Kia cars and SUVs are missing a “key” anti-theft device, and thieves know.

An insurance industry group says these cars are stolen at nearly twice the rate of the rest of the auto industry because their keys lack computer chips for theft “immobilizer” systems.

The thefts apparently started in the Milwaukee area two years ago and spread to multiple Midwest cities and as far away as Colorado and New Mexico after instructional videos appeared on social media.

The Highway Loss Data Institute, a unit of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, found that Hyundais and Kias without immobilizers had a vehicle theft claim rate of 2.18 per 1,000 insured vehicle years. The rest of the industry combined had a rate of 1.21. An insured vehicle year is equal to one vehicle insured for one year.

The institute, which issued its findings on Thursday, compared vehicles from the 2015 through 2019 model years. It studied vehicle theft claims from 2021.

Chip keys, which started to show up in the 1990s, communicate with another chip in the ignition switch. If they match, the engines will start. If they don’t match, a thief can’t start the engine.

Keys don’t have an immobilizer system in several lower-priced versions of vehicles from the two South Korean automakers such as the Kia Rio and Sportage and the Hyundai Accent, the institute said.

“Our earlier studies show that vehicle theft losses plunged after immobilizers were introduced,” said Matt Moore, senior vice president of the institute. “Unfortunately, Hyundai and Kia have lagged behind other automakers in making them standard equipment.”

In the 2015 model year, immobilizers were standard on 96% of other manufacturers’ models, the institute said. But they were standard on only 26% of Hyundai and Kia models. The carmakers haven’t explained their decision to not include immobilizers on some models.

Videos show thieves prying the ignition cover off the Hyundai and Kia vehicles, then using a screwdriver or USB cable to start them and drive away.

Last year in Milwaukee, 66% of the 10,476 stolen vehicles were Hyundais or Kias, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper….

The American Kleptocracy: A government of liars, thieves and lawbreakers

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable.”—H. L. Mencken

The American kleptocracy (a government ruled by thieves) continues to suck the American people down a rabbit hole into a parallel universe in which the Constitution is meaningless, the government is all-powerful, and the citizenry is powerless to defend itself against government agents who steal, spy, lie, plunder, kill, abuse and generally inflict mayhem and sow madness on everyone and everything in their sphere.

Think about it.

Almost every tyranny being perpetrated by the U.S. government against the citizenry—purportedly to keep us safe and the nation secure—has come about as a result of some threat manufactured in one way or another by our own government.

Cyberwarfare. Terrorism. Bio-chemical attacks. The nuclear arms race. Surveillance. The drug wars. Domestic extremism. The COVID-19 pandemic.

In almost every instance, the U.S. government (often spearheaded by the FBI) has in its typical Machiavellian fashion sown the seeds of terror domestically and internationally in order to expand its own totalitarian powers.

Who is the biggest black market buyer and stockpiler of cyberweapons (weaponized malware that can be used to hack into computer systems, spy on citizens, and destabilize vast computer networks)? The U.S. government.

Who is the largest weapons manufacturer and exporter in the world, such that they are literally arming the world? The U.S. government.

Which country has a history of secretly testing out dangerous weapons and technologies on its own citizens? The U.S. government.

Which country has conducted secret experiments on an unsuspecting populace—citizens and noncitizens alike—making healthy people sick by spraying them with chemicals, injecting them with infectious diseases and…

Car thieves face curbs on online sales of key hacking technology fuelling surge in crime

Criminal gangs of car thieves face new legal curbs to prevent them buying DIY devices online to hack keyless technology and steal vehicles.

Ministers and police chiefs are considering legislation to close loopholes that allow the devices to be bought online on sites including eBay and Amazon.

Amid a surge in thefts, the Telegraph found firms freely selling electronic equipment to hack keyless cars, jammers to disable trackers and modern “skeleton” keys to open and drive away vehicles.

Police chiefs and motor manufacturers are concerned the ready availability of the technology is fuelling a rise in car thefts which increased by 14 per cent last year to more than 105,000.

Criminals are getting the equipment online and then “productionizing” it for cheap mass use by gangs of thieves, according to Thatcham Research, the motor insurers’ automotive research centre.

Kit Malthouse, the policing minister, held a summit of police and car industry chiefs last week to consider counter measures and is understood to be “open” to new laws to close the loopholes.

Assistant chief constable Jenny Sims, the National Police Chief Council’s (NPCC) lead on vehicle crime, said she was engaged in a “big piece of work” with the online firms to prevent sales of the devices to criminals and restrict it to legitimate businesses like garages, car dealers and locksmiths.

“We are looking at whether or not there are any legislative changes we can make, but at the same time we are working with sellers as legislation takes time. We’d rather do it voluntarily through the sellers who are cooperating,” she said.

It is not illegal to sell, buy or possess the technology but police can arrest prospective thieves if they have the equipment with them and can be shown to be “going equipped” to steal a vehicle.

One company based in Bulgaria offered an off-the-shelf “car relay attack unit.” This enables one member of a gang to scan and capture the signal from a keyless fob in a house before “relaying” it to a colleague by the car to open it and drive it…

Hacker Shows How Gas Pumps Are Security Swiss Cheese And Easy Targets For Thieves

gas station thieves steal gas through hacking

As gas prices continue to rise, some shadowy figures are looking for “alternative” method to acquire fuel, whether legal or not. One such method, specifically hacking a gas pump, has led to the recent theft of 400 gallons of fuel at a High Point gas station in North Carolina. However, this is not the only incidence of this happening, and as it turns out, gas pumps are surprisingly vulnerable to being hacked.

Earlier this week, a video surfaced of a man stealing gas for himself and other vehicles that arrived after the gas station had closed. Police and news outlets claim that the person pointed a device at the gas pump to release the dispenser to help fill up several cars waiting for free gas, leading to the theft of approximately $1600 in fuel. It is speculated that the thieves used a “special remote to alter the mechanics of the gas pump that puts it in ‘dispense mode,’ dispensing hundreds of gallons of gas for free,” according to Petroleum Technician Trey Barker, who spoke with Fox 8 in North Carolina. He continued, stating, “The reason dispensers have this option is so petroleum technicians, and NC Weight and Measures can test and calibrate dispensers.”

Interestingly, this theft is not the only one in recent years and is not the only option thieves have. In 2018, Kaspersky Labs found a basic web interface on a Linux-based controller unit in an embedded box at a gas station somewhere in the US. Following this discovery, it was found that this site is “responsible for managing every component of the station, including dispensers, payment terminals and more,” at the heart of the gas station. However, this was not the only gas station at risk, as there were at least 1,000 others with similar infrastructure exposed to the internet.

It is likely that other gas pump brands may use a similar configurations that could be exposed as well, and we might not know about them yet. In any event, default credentials for these web interfaces are sometimes not changed, allowing easy access into these systems. Besides this, there might also be…
