The Trump effect on cybersecurity: Tough to tell

Donald Trump’s effect on cybersecurity after he’s sworn in as president next month will likely be toward military uses of cyber weapons and stronger tools for law enforcement to crack encryption, but the impact is hard to predict due to the vagueness of his proposals so far.

The most detailed Trump cyber plan is just 175 words long and includes some initiatives that sound like what’s already in place.

On the campaign trail and during debates he occasionally hit the topic, but again with little detail and perhaps little understanding of how the internet works. For example, he called for Microsoft founder Bill Gates to find a way to shut off parts of the internet to ISIS as a way to halt its recruitment efforts.

Trump Cybersecurity Do’s and Don’ts

President-elect Donald Trump ran a campaign focused on national security and making America great again through economic reform.  Clearly both goals should include policies and programs to bolster the nation’s cybersecurity capabilities.  This shouldn’t be an abstract concept to Mr. Trump after an election cycle featuring Russian hacks and WikiLeaks posts. 

To reinforce this priority, it is also worth noting that in a pre-election survey by ESG research, 49% of cybersecurity professionals said that cybersecurity is a critical issue and should be the top national security priority for the next President while 45% said cybersecurity is a very important issue and should be one of the top national security priorities for the next President (note: I am an ESG employee).  If those citizens on the front-line see cybersecurity as a major priority, this should speak volumes to the President-elect.

Spooked by Trump, Internet Archive looks to make a copy of itself … in Canada

The folks who run the indispensable Internet Archive Wayback Machine, among other services, have seen the future of a Trump Administration and it scares them enough to spur the creation of the Internet Archive of Canada … just in case.

From the organization’s blog post today:

The history of libraries is one of loss.  The Library of Alexandria is best known for its disappearance.

Libraries like ours are susceptible to different fault lines: Earthquakes, legal regimes, institutional failure.
