Here are three life-saving tips that will padlock your phone shut, according to Computer World.

1. Safe Browsing

Chrome‘s Safe Browsing mode is enabled by default, but there is a newer and more effective version.

It’s called “Enhanced Safe Browsing” and will operate “in the background to provide faster, proactive protection against dangerous websites, downloads, and extensions,” according to Google’s website.

Here’s how you access it:

  • Open Chrome on your Android.
  • Select the three-dot menu icon in the app’s upper-right corner.
  • Select Settings > Privacy and Security > Safe Browsing. Tap the dot next to “Enhanced protection.”

An extra helpful tip: Return to Chrome’s Settings menu and select “Safety check.”

This will open a useful one-tap tool for scanning browser settings and saved passwords, and will let you know of any possible breaches or weak spots in your security.

2. Smart Lock

Android’s Smart Lock feature is designed to make security simpler, by pausing the extra protections when it’s in your hands.

It will automatically allow you to keep your phone unlocked whenever you’re in a trusted place like your home or office, or when you’re connected to a commonly-used Bluetooth device, like your earbuds.

Here’s how depending on your device type:

  • For Android 12 and later, Android settings > Security > Advanced Settings.
  • For earlier Android versions, open Android settings > Security > Screen Lock.
  • For Samsung devices, Settings > Lock Screen.

3. Lockdown Mode

No, not that kind of lockdown.

The handy Android setting called “Lockdown Mode” provides you with an easy way to temporarily lockdown your phone.

Energy costs have rocketed since last winter with the average dual fuel bill now at an eyewatering £2,500 a year.  

It’s feared some households looking to cut energy usage are now turning off their WiFi router at night.

It may seem counterintuitive but shutting down your WiFi can actually increase your bills, according to Nick Hunn, chief technology officer at wireless consultancy WiFore.

He said: “Turning off your WiFi sounds like a good idea, but the unintended consequence can be that you end up using more energy.”

Most WiFi routers contain the modem which is constantly trying to improve the speed of your internet connection by updating its knowledge to make it more efficient, Nick explained.

When the router is switched off, the process starts from scratch.

He said: “If you turn the router off every day, upload and download speeds are likely to be poorer.

“You’re more likely to have a slower connection with things buffering.

“Because it is slower you use more power, which increases the consumption.”

Most routers, especially the more modern ones from the last five years, use relatively little energy.

Nick added: “A lot of effort now goes into making designs more energy efficient.

“With most of these devices, the energy saving you’re going to make isn’t going to be worth turning off.”

Turning off your WiFi may also prompt your provider to place a speed restriction on the connection because they suspect a fault.

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, said: “Bear in mind that most routers use relatively little power – about 10W – similar to an energy-saving lightbulb.

“Leaving it on for eight hours while you sleep will add about £10 to your bill over the course of a year.

Hackers can covertly turn a cable inside a computer into a makeshift antenna that can secretly transmit sensitive data, even from “air-gapped” devices that are deliberately not connected to the internet.

Air-gapped computers are commonly used by government security services and key infrastructure control systems to prevent remote hackers from gaining access, but that doesn’t mean it is impossible to get data out.

Mordechai Guri at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, has worked for years to develop a series of proof of concept attacks that use different components within computers as unusual transmitters. In the past he has managed to extract information by encoding it in rapid adjustments of screen brightness, deliberate temperature changes within a machine or flickering power LEDs.

Guri’s latest attack focuses on the Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) cables that connect CD, DVD and hard disc drives to the motherboard of most computers. He found that by deliberately creating a very specific series of superfluous data reads or writes from or to the drives, the cables can be made to create a radio wave at around 6 gigahertz. This wave can be used to encode and transmit data to a waiting hacker several metres…
