Unlocked Galaxy S10 Units In The US Get May Security Update

Samsung may have already started rolling out the June 2021 Android security patch to its devices, but it’s not done sending out the current month’s security update yet. The unlocked Galaxy S10 units in the US are now receiving the May 2021 Android security patch. The update comes a couple of weeks after the international variants of the 2019 Galaxy flagships received it.

The latest update for the unlocked units of the Galaxy S10 series in the US carries the firmware version G97xU1UES5GUD1. The new software is unlikely to pack any new features and/or enhancements, except for the security vulnerability fixes for this month.

The May security update for most other Galaxy flagships contained some camera performance improvements. Samsung also promised improved file sharing between Galaxy devices using Quick Share. It’s unfortunate that the same improvements aren’t coming over to the unlocked Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10e, and Galaxy S10+ in the US. Even the carried-locked variants of these phones stateside got those minor improvements. Hopefully, Samsung will include them in the June update for the unlocked units.

May security update reaches the unlocked Galaxy S10 units in the US

It has been a fairly long wait but if you own an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e, or the S10+ and live in the US, then the May security update is finally on your way. You can download it by navigating to Settings » Software update on your phone and then tapping on Download and install. The rollout has just begun, so you may need to wait for a few days to receive the update over the air (OTA). You should get a notification prompting you to download the OTA file once it becomes available for your phone.

As said before, Samsung, which is the world’s No. 1 smartphone vendor, has already started rolling out the June security update to its devices. The Galaxy S21 series and the Galaxy Z Flip 5G are the first two phones to receive the new Android security maintenance release (SMR). More Galaxy smartphones and tablets should join the party in the coming days. Google has yet to detail the contents of the June 2021 SMR. It usually publishes the latest security bulletin in the first week of the new month.

Android 11 update reaches Samsung Galaxy A51 units in India

Earlier this month, Samsung started sending out the update to One UI 3.0 based on Android 11 to the Galaxy A51 units sold in Russia. It was inevitably just a matter of time until the update would make it to more countries and territories, and today it’s reached India.

The new release for Indian units has been captured on a couple of Samsung-dedicated firmware pages, with the new build number ending in DUB1 and the February 2021 security patch level included for good measure.

The over-the-air rollout should start any moment now, and then from the time it does expect it to take at least a few days to gradually land on all of the A51 units sold in India.

Chinese court finds Gionee guilty of planting malware on more than 20 million units

The Chinese court has published a verdict on a case involving the Chinese smartphone maker Gionee. It seems that Gionee planted a Trojan Horse on more than 20 million devices to money from unsolicited ads and other malicious activities without the user’s knowledge.

Chinese finds Gionee guilty of planting malware on more than 20 million units

The Shenzhen Zhipu Technology Co. Ltd., which is a subsidiary of Gionee, has implanted a Trojan Horse through a software update using the so-called “Story Lock Screen” app. The first devices infected with the “Dark Horse Program” were in December 2018. The job was carried out until October 2019 and for that period, the company is said to have earned around $4.2 million, affecting 21.75 million smartphones. The expenses for that period are just a little below $1.3 million.

Xu Li, Zhu Ying, Jia Zhengqiang and Pan Qi were found guilty in the process of illegally controlling mobile devices and are sentenced from 3 to 3.5 years in prison along with a CNY 200,000 (~$30,000) fine each.

Although shocking, this seems to be a common practice with cheap Chinese smartphones and other companies were also found guilty of the same malicious activity, Infinix and Tecno are one of them.
