Samsung unveils 512GB DRAM CXL module in E3.S form factor • The Register

Samsung has unveiled a 512-gigabyte Compute Express Link (CXL) DRAM module, which awaits servers to make it sing.

The device will ship in the EDSFF E3.S form factor – a standard most often employed in high-capacity solid-state disks (SSDs).

E3.S is expected to replace both M2 and 2.5-inch SSDs eventually, but Samsung has acknowledged that it may be some time before servers ready to handle the device appear. That time may well be spent figuring out how to make DRAM work well in E3.S, as DRAM is faster than the flash used in SSDs. The good news is PCIe 5.0 can handle that extra I/O action.

For now, the Korean giant is pleased that Lenovo has signed up to work on CXL devices.

The Chinese builder will likely get its hands on the 512GB CXL DRAM modules in Q3, when Samsung says “joint evaluation and testing” will commence, before “commercialization as next-generation server platforms become available.”

CXL matters because it enables the creation of switched fabrics that allow a host server to connect to resources on multiple other devices. Servers packing some of Samsung’s new 512GB monsters could therefore be accessed by other servers – the sort of thing VMware has started to build with its Project Capitola software-defined memory.

Samsung has its own software on the way to put the modules to work. The chaebol has an updated version of its open source Scalable Memory Development Kit in the pipeline and suggests it will take advantage of the new module and CXL.

Large memory modules are attractive because applications like AI, ML, ERP, and clouds all benefit from higher compute density and more opportunities to store data in-memory.

Samsung has previously teased 512GB DDR5 DIMMS, so it’s the implementation of CXL and form factor that makes this announcement most significant. ®

ETSI Unveils Global Security Standard for Consumer Mobile Devices

Today our smartphones and tablets are fundamental for citizens and hold a wide range of user data and apps. At the same time, security attacks have increased with malicious applications and network eavesdropping. To define security and assurance requirements for smart phones and tablets, mitigate potential risks and protect users, ETSI has released a world class standard called Consumer Mobile Device Protection Profile, ETSI TS 103 732. The specification identifies key security and privacy risks for user data and provides appropriate protection.

The new ETSI standard specifies security requirements for consumer mobile devices. It ensures the protection of key user data such as photos, videos, user location, emails, SMS, calls, passwords for web services, and fitness related data.

The ETSI specification has a broad coverage of security features including cryptographic support, user data protection, identification and authentication, security management, privacy protection, resistance to physical attack, secure boot, and trusted communication channels.

In addition, ETSI TS 103 732 defines the security assurance requirements based on Common Criteria and it is therefore also suitable for certification initiatives such as the European Cybersecurity Act. The standard was developed to support consumer mobile devices manufacturers to achieve security certification. It also offers a common methodology for evaluators to assess the security of consumer mobile devices.

Alex Leadbeater, ETSI Cybersecurity Chair
Following the excellent improvement in security achieved with ETSI EN 303 645 for consumer IoT devices, ETSI has been working on securing other consumer devices. ETSI TS 103 732 provides a complete solution to secure smart phones and tablets, minimizing privacy risks and maximizing user confidence that their smart devices protect their data.

Jamf unveils a range of new features at its 12th annual conference

Jamf has kicked off its 12th annual Jamf Nation User Conference with more than 11,000 Apple administrators in attendance worldwide.

Jamf now serves more than 57,000 customers and runs on approximately 25 million devices worldwide.

“Over time, we’ve expanded our platform from Apple device management to Apple enterprise management, which we define as the space between what Apple creates, and the enterprise requires,” says Jamf CEO, Dean Hager.

“In doing so, we have a specific vision for the enterprise – a vision to empower individuals with technology that is enterprise-secure and consumer-simple while protecting personal privacy.”

The company says the office no longer limits today’s workforce, and with mobile employees comes an increased need to access resources seamlessly but securely. Some of the features announced include:

Jamf Private Access

Jamf Private Access is a true zero trust network access solution that replaces legacy conditional access and VPN technology, ensuring that business connections are secure after a user authenticates into their device. Jamf Private Access also enables non-business applications to route directly to the Internet or utilise Apple’s new iCloud+ Privacy Relay, preserving end-user privacy and optimising network infrastructure.

Jamf and Google Cloud BeyondCorp enterprise integration

Jamf announced a new integration with Google Cloud’s BeyondCorp Enterprise to bring device compliance to Jamf Pro and Google admins. This integration helps support and encourage employee choice initiatives by equipping admins with a powerful tool – context-aware access to company resources – by checking a devices management and compliance status with Jamf Pro.

With many organisations not going back to employees in the office full-time, security teams need to focus on protecting company resources when accessed externally. Jamf says with the increasing number of attacks on Apple devices, organisations need an Apple solution to keep users and resources safe, no matter the device they use or where they’re working from.
