Women make up just 24% of the cyber workforce. CISA wants to fix that.

As the race to recruit female talent in STEM continues moving ahead with steady progress, stunning statistics still wrack the cybersecurity sector: Women working in cybersecurity currently account for less than one quarter of the overall workforce.

Megan Rapinoe. Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Shirley Chisholm. Donning jeans and a Ukrainian flag t-shirt, the director of the nation’s lead cybersecurity agency ticked through PowerPoint slides of women “who took a sledgehammer to the glass ceiling.”

“I need your help,” said Jen Easterly, director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, on Friday to an audience of 1,700 female cybersecurity professionals assembled for a three-day technical conference in Cleveland. “We need to get to 50% of cybersecurity by the year 2030. Think we can do it?” Someone whistled. ACDC pulsed through the speakers. “Come on!” Easterly rallied.

After exiting the stage, Easterly told CBS News she has become accustomed to setting “unreasonable” goals. “That’s been sort of my [modus operandi] my entire life,” she quipped. “And I honestly believe if you set a super ambitious goal, and you as a leader inspire and empower people, and look at that goal as something that may be challenging, highly ambitious, but is in fact achievable, you can get there.”

Pressed on how close America’s cyber defense agency is to “getting there,” Easterly responded down to the decimal. “Right now, we’re at 36.4% women at CISA’s workforce, but I think we can get to 50% before 2030.” She paused before adding,  “Actually, I’m hoping we can get there before 2025.”

Easterly says she hopes colleagues across the federal workforce – including FBI, NSA, U.S. Secret Service – make similar pledges. The Army veteran-turned-corporate leader came close to “getting there” in her previous stint as head of Firm Resilience at Morgan Stanley, where she oversaw a team that was roughly 48% women.

Currently, there’s just one woman serving as chief information security officer, or “CISO,” among the top 10 largest companies nationwide: Chandra McMahon,…

After ‘Sulli Deals’, now ‘Bulli Bai’ app lists Muslim women ‘for sale’. Delhi Police lodges FIR

New Delhi: Months after a now defunct website called ‘Sulli Deals’ put up photographs of Indian Muslim women, listing them for “sale”, a similar website and app by the name of ‘Bulli Bai’ has triggered outrage.

On the complaint of a woman journalist who had allegedly been targeted by the app, Delhi Police has registered an FIR under section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC, the ANI reported Sunday.

The app, which surfaced on software development platform GitHub and reportedly carried pictures of a 100 Muslim women, was called out by several women on social media Saturday.

Later in the day, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tweeted that the app has been blocked by GitHub and the police and Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) an agency under the IT ministry that deals with cyber security are probing the matter.

The Delhi Police had tweeted Saturday that concerned officials had been directed to take appropriate action, reacting to a tweet by journalist Ismat Ara, who shared a screenshot of her photos featured on the app.

“Very sad that as a Muslim woman you have to start your new year with this sense of fear and disgust,” she wrote.

Another journalist, Hiba Beg, also shared on Twitter that her pictures “were being auctioned off” on the app.

The website http://bullibai.github.io/ is no longer functional. Four Twitter accounts that were posting screenshots of the app (@wannabesigmaf, @bullibai_, @sage0x11 and @jattkhalsa7) have been deactivated.

Crimes against women up by 34% in Krishna district- The New Indian Express

By Express News Service

VIJAYAWADA: Krishna district has witnessed a 34 per cent rise in crimes against women this year by recording 1,651 cases compared to 1,229 cases last year. The district observed an overall increase in crime rate by 18 per cent with 24,862 cases.

Presenting the annual district crime statistics before the media on Thursday here at Vijayawada, district SP Siddharth Kaushal said the district police have topped in the state for the outstanding work in cracking down the illicit trafficking as a part of the state government’s brainchild programme ‘Abolishment of Alcohol’. He added that they stood first in various initiatives such as Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offences (ITSSO), Investigation Tracking System for SC/ST cases, E-office, Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) and Mobile Security Check Device (MSCD) among others. According to the crime statistics, while the district has recorded a total of 24,862 cases against 20,911 in the previous year, the district police have filed chargesheets for 27,396 cases pertaining to the present year and pending from the previous year.

“At a rate of 75 chargesheets per day, the district police have created a record and disposed off the cases to courts for further process. Additionally, we successfully reduced the time taken to file a chargesheet from 68 days to 34 days in 2021. It became possible with the help of technology,” Siddhartha Kaushal said.

He also appreciated the efforts of the officials for keeping the district first in the State in terms of conviction rate, average time to file chargesheet, days taken for investigation and lost property recovery. Kaushal attributed the increase in the number of crimes against women to the ‘free registration of FIRs’ and various outreach programmes initiated by the district police. The SP said a total of 2,974 persons were arrested in such cases and 1,503 chargesheets were filed.

Norwich doctor jailed for secretly filming women

Published:
9:07 AM November 20, 2021

A doctor from Norwich who hacked personal photo accounts and used hidden cameras to spy on women has been jailed.

Vinesh Godhania, 33, from Marlingford Way, was jailed for two years and eight months at St Albans Crown Court on Friday (November 19).

He had pleaded guilty to seven counts of voyeurism and eight counts of unauthorised access to computer material.

The offences were committed from 2012 until 2020, when Godhania was initially a medical student and then went on to qualify as a doctor.

He was arrested in November 2020 following an investigation by the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU).

Godhania admitted to setting up covert cameras to film a number of victims without their knowledge.

He also used key logging software on NHS computers to fraudulently obtain data relating to both colleagues and passwords.

He also admitted to hacking a number of women’s iCloud accounts, gaining access of sexually explicit photos of them, as well as personal information such as passwords.

Detective Sergeant Ian Russell, from ERSOU’s cyber crime unit, said: “These were despicable actions by a man in a position of trust, and I’m really pleased he will now be facing time behind bars.

“I’d like to thank the victims for their bravery throughout this case. It’s thanks to their support and courage that Godhania has been jailed.

“This abhorrent behaviour is never acceptable and we will work hard to ensure that those who look to take advantage of others in this sickening way are identified and made to face the consequences of their actions.”

The ERSOU’s Cyber Protection team have given the following advice on how to avoid being a victim of cyber crime:

1. Use a strong and separate password for your email account
2. Create strong passwords using two random words
3. Save your passwords in your browser – this is safer than using weak passwords or the same password for each site
4. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)
5. Update your devices
6. Back up your data
