Carbon Black buys Confer for next-gen anti-virus

Carbon Black has bought Confer to boost its protection for network endpoints using a behavioral form of antivirus combined with cloud analysis of threats rather than traditional signature-based software.

Called Cb Defense, the renamed Confer product uses behavior-based techniques to prevent attacks from getting started and blends in attack-detection and response as a way to halt ongoing attacks.

These are supported by analytics based in the cloud that help detect malwareless attacks that employ legitimate tools that are built into operating systems as a way to stay below the radar of defenses that use hashes and signatures to detect.

Digital Guardian buys Code Green to gain data-loss prevention tech

Endpoint security vendor Digital Guardian has bought Code Green Networks, which makes data loss prevention appliances for businesses.

The purchase gives Digital Guardian a DLP offering that, rolled in with the company’s existing products, will provide endpoint, network and cloud data protection overseen by a single console, the company says. This will enable applying policies that will be enforced regardless of where the data is located and regardless of who accessed it and with what device.

Blackberry buys Good Technology as it further expands into mobile device security

Blackberry has moved further into the mobile device management space by purchasing Good Technology for US$ 425 million [m].

Good Technology sells enterprise mobile security products and was Blackberry’s competitor. In a January blog post, Blackberry called out Good for claiming it was the first company to add a special billing feature to its products.

A separate blog post on Friday discussing the merger made note of this history, saying the companies have taken “aggressive positions” through the years.
