Tim Cook: The FBI wants us to write the software equivalent of cancer

Tim Cook has said the U.S. government is requiring Apple to write “the software equivalent of cancer” by demanding that it help unlock an iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino terrorists.

“What’s at stake here is, can the government compel Apple to write software that we believe would make hundreds of millions of customers vulnerable around the world — including the U.S. — and also trample civil liberties,” Cook said.

He made his remarks in a 30-minute interview that aired on ABC News Wednesday evening. The CEO was pressed repeatedly on why Apple shouldn’t make an exception for a single iPhone that was used by a terrorist.

Apple CEO Cook: Judge’s order to decrypt shooter’s iPhone is more than an encryption issue

A court order for Apple to help the FBI carry out a brute-force attack on the iPhone used by shooters in last year’s San Bernardino terrorist attack would set a precedent with broad implications, experts say.

For one, it could mean that in the future makers of encryption products might have to modify them to meet similar orders if they can’t otherwise access the encrypted data they contain. This raises the concern of privacy advocates who say encryption is important not only to protect personal data but also to safeguard transactions and industrial secrets.

On the flip side, if the order is overturned, it could leave law enforcement without a tool it desperately wants until a federal law passes that clearly spells out that product manufacturers must be able to meet the demands of such orders. Given the contentious nature of federal politics this year, that could be a long process.

Apple’s Tim Cook warns that sacrificing privacy ‘risks our way of life’

Apple CEO Tim Cook has warned of “dire consequences” if tech companies can’t protect the privacy of those who use their products.

Giving up our privacy to digital technologies exposes us to greater risks than just identity theft and financial losses—serious though those things are, Cook said in a brief speech at a cybersecurity summit in Silicon Valley on Friday.

“History has shown us that sacrificing our right to privacy can have dire consequences,” Cook said.

“We still live in a world where all people are not treated equally. Too many people do not feel free to practice their religion or express their opinion or love who they choose—or love who they choose,” he repeated for emphasis, “in a world in which that information can make the difference between life or death.”
