Integrated Security for Telco Cloud Edge and Private 5G

Telcos and enterprises are realizing the need to move toward the edge and deploy edge cloud solutions to leverage the massive advances in transmission offered by 5G. Benefits such as speed, low-latency, capacity will drive major transformation for telcos and enterprises opening new revenue opportunities and business models.

Telcos and enterprises are exploring new use cases by deploying edge clouds and bringing content and applications closer to the users and billions of IoT devices to meet the low-latency requirements. The Ericsson 2022 mobility report forecasts that over 30 billion Internet of Things (IoT) connected devices will be connected by 2027.

The 5G core network functions could be deployed as a microservice in a private data center of the CSP and enterprise network or a public cloud, the shift to the edge and deploying telco cloud edge services and enterprise hybrid private 5G networks introduce new security threats that are associated with the 5G and edge deployment.

Even though there are security risks with 3G/4G, these risks are mainly associated with external attacks. However, with 5G/MEC/IoT architecture, this risk becomes larger and more serious. 5G core and edge sites can be attacked from the internal network in an “inside-to-outside” approach. Considering that 5G provides high-speed internet broadband, connecting a massive number of consumer and IoT devices, it can be considered as a new point of attack for the 5G cloud edge architecture.

Such massive transformation is forcing telcos and enterprises deploying cloud edge and private 5G services to re-think their security and network protection. There are many challenges in how telcos and enterprises deploy security solutions today as they cannot provide integrated 5G core and security solutions to adapt with cloud-edge use cases. For example, moving to the edge will require a low footprint, automation, scaling and simplified lifecycle management (LCM). Given the increase in the number of edge sites that may be deployed, it will be very complex to manually manage and scale different security solutions. The typical deployments of…

Samsung is rolling out a small update for the Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+

Samsung has fixed a GPS issue on several old Galaxy S models and has been delivering updates to them. And when we say “old”, we mean it – last month it was the Galaxy S8 from 2017 and the S7 from the year before. Now there is an update for an ever older series, the Galaxy S6 family from 2015.

The update has been spotted in the Netherlands and Belgium. Dutch Galaxy S6 and S6 edge that were bought from Vodafone are getting firmware versions G920FXXU6EVG1 and G925FXXU6EVG3, respectively. In Belgium, it is SIM-free Galaxy S6 and S6 edge+ that are being updated.

This should slowly expand to cover all S6 versions, carrier ones and unlocked, plus ones in other countries. If you don’t see a notification, you can check for updates manually. If you still don’t see it, you will have to arm yourself with patience.

The update doesn’t mention a GPS fix like it did with the Galaxy S8, though it is probably what this is. The change log only talks of stability improvements and bug fixes, “new and/or improved features” and “further performance improvements”.

It is also a much smaller update, weighing in at under 13MB, compared to 420MB update of the S8. It goes without saying that this doesn’t include a new Android version, not even a new security patch. Still, any update is a surprise given that the launched 7 and a half years ago.

The Samsung Galaxy A40 is much more recent, having hit the streets in 2019, but it’s already nearing the end of its 4 year period of guaranteed security patches. The A40 was running the July patch and is now moving up to the September one with a 280MB update (A405FNXXS4CVH1).

The gap is expected as the phone is currently on a quarterly update schedule. However, when it turns 4 in March 2019 it may drop down to the biannual schedule (which is home to some A-series models from 2018, but also some contemporary models like the Galaxy A30, A60, A70, A80 and A90 5G).

Scam advertisements are finding their victims through the Microsoft Edge browser / Digital Information World

It’s been quite a while since Windows 11 rolled out. Lately, Microsoft has been busy working to overcome any flaws in its security system. One of the latest editions by the company is the addition of an improved feature such as Enhanced Security to the Microsoft Edge browser, as the browser is getting more popular among Windows users all over the world.

Recently, a security threat was identified by Malwarebytes, an Ireland-based anti-malware solution company. This security threat appears in the form of an ad campaign going on in the My Feed area of the Edge browser disguised as a tech support campaign in which a forged lock page of the Edge browser is posted to lure in the victims.

As explained by the researchers, the malware is a threat to specific users only. If a user is browsing with their VPN turned on or a bot is surfing, then the redirect will be towards the original advertisement page posted by the Taboola advertising firm, posing no threat at all to the user. Meanwhile, victims will be lured toward the scam page, which apparently can’t be blocked easily. The malware identifies these victims through a specific Java code.

Within a day, the ad malware was able to get its hands on more than two hundred different users. On their blog page, Malware shared several domains that have been identified as being involved with this malicious activity. However, one of the surprising discoveries was when Malwarebytes identified one of the website domains as being linked to a software house in India belonging to the owner of that company.

Users using the Browser Guard Extension service being offered by Malwarebytes were found to be protected from getting scammed by any of such malware advertisements.

Microsoft Edge still has a long way to go before it reaches Google Chrome level, but based on the latest features being offered by the developers, the browser is now getting recognition among Microsoft Windows users. This is why keeping the browser and users safe from such scams is an important task for the company, and Microsoft is taking all the necessary steps to ensure users have an amazing experience.

Since 2019, these scams have spread to a large number of users, luring users in many…

Microsoft Edge 105.0.1343.42 Stable fixes 8 security issues

Microsoft released a security update for the stable version of the company’s Edge web browser. Microsoft Edge 105.0.1343.42 fixes eight security issues in the web browser.

The security update is already available. Most Edge installations will receive the update automatically, thanks to the built-in updating functionality of the browser.

Edge users may speed up the installation of the update by loading edge://settings/help in the browser’s address bar, or selecting Menu > Help > About Microsoft Edge alternatively.

Edge displays the installed version and runs a check for updates. The browser should pick up the security update at this point and install it automatically. A restart is required to complete the process.

Microsoft does not reveal much about the security update in the release announcement on the official Deploy Edge website.

Microsoft has released the latest?Microsoft Edge Stable Channel (Version 105.0.1343.42), which incorporates the latest Security Updates of the Chromium project.

The security updates are not specific to Microsoft Edge, but affect all Chromium-based web browsers. Google released the last security update for Chrome on September 14, 2022. The update fixed 11 different security issues in Chrome, including several rated with a severity of high.

Microsoft patched the security issues relevant to the Edge browser. All Chromium-based browsers share a core, but companies may add features to the browser that are custom; this explains the difference in the number of issues patched in Chrome and in Edge.

The maximum severity rating of the issues patched in Microsoft Edge is high, the second highest after critical.

Edge users who want to know more may check the release notes on Microsoft’s Update Guide website.

Windows users who have Edge installed on their devices may want to upgrade the browser as soon as possible, even if it is not the primary browser on the system.

Now You: which web browser is your favorite, and why?
