Another huge US medical data breach confirmed after Fortra mass-hack

Hackers stole another half a million people’s personal and health information during a ransomware attack on a technology vendor earlier this year.

Intellihartx, a Tennessee-based company that handles patient payment balances and collections, said in a notice filed with the Maine attorney general’s office that 489,830 patients had information stolen in the cyberattack targeting its vendor, Fortra.

According to the notice, the hackers stole patient names, addresses, dates of birth and Social Security numbers. The breach also compromised patient medical billing and insurance information, as well as diagnoses and medication.

Intellihartx is the latest company to come forward as a victim of the mass ransomware attack targeting Fortra’s GoAnywhere file-transfer software, which organizations use for sharing large data sets across the internet. The Clop ransomware group claimed responsibility for mass-exploiting a previously undisclosed security flaw in Fortra’s GoAnywhere software in February, which affected more than a hundred companies and organizations, including digital financier Hatch Bank, security giant Rubrik, and the City of Toronto.

Millions of patients across the United States also had their health information stolen in the cyberattack, including children’s data.

The impact of Clop’s ransomware attack prompted the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to publish an alert warning that the ransomware group was targeting the healthcare industry.

Clop has targeted other vendors of file transfer tools, including Accellion’s file transfer appliance and more recently, a mass-hack involving MOVEit, a file transfer tool developed by Progress Systems.

Norton Password Manager Hack Results in Huge Security Breach for Users!

1

Editorial Note – Parent company Gen Digital has reached out to us just to confirm that the issue is 100% entirely contained within Norton Password Manager and we would like to clarify, just in case of any ambiguity, that this article bears no reflection on Gen Digital’s other online security interests.

It is, of course, good security practice to have a complex password for your various online accounts. – With this in mind, however, the downside to this is that a good password is typically very difficult to remember. As such, password management software has become rather popular in recent years as effectively representing a one-stop secure depository for all your log-in information.

If you did, however, happen to use Norton Password Manager, then be warned! – Following a report via BleepingComputer, parent company Gen Digital has confirmed a huge security breach which has effectively seen every single user account, at least for a pretty period of time, potentially compromised!

And yes, I think this is what they call irony…

Norton Password Manager Users Warned Data Has Been Compromised!

According to the report, unknown person/s managed to obtain highly sensitive log-in information for Norton Password Manager via the Dark Web which, in basic terms, gave them ‘admin’ level access to the service. Through this, they could literally view and access any account, and yes, this includes the saved log-in information.

Now, admittedly, from an individual level, the chances that you have been affected by this breach are very slim. With that being said though, is this really a risk you would want to take? – Just when you thought this couldn’t get any more alarming, however, it would appear that this breach occurred over 6 weeks ago, and with it only just now being publically disclosed, that doesn’t exactly do much to help the reputation of Norton Password Manager nor its user base!

Put simply though, if you happen to use this product to manage your online security, expect an email at pretty much any moment detailing the breach. – For the interim, however, I would strongly advise you to access all the accounts you store on there and ensure you have,…

Security tip: Are you making this huge Wi-Fi mistake?

You pay good money for your internet service, so I understand the frustration of a slow connection. News flash: It’s not always your ISP’s fault. Here are common Wi-Fi mistakes.

Entertaining guests? They’ll want access to your Wi-Fi, but it’s a pain to give out your login repeatedly. Get tech smart. Post a QR code in your home that automatically signs in guests on your home network.

Now, if a hacker gets into your home network, they can find their way to your personal information. Should you set your home Wi-Fi network to public or private? The answer might surprise you.

It’s not what you think

Having your home Wi-Fi network set to private would be the most secure setting, right? That’s actually incorrect. But don’t let the sloppy terminology confuse you.

When you are on your home network and have it configured as private on your computer, your PC is undiscoverable by other devices connected to the same network. So, in this case, the public Wi-Fi setting is more secure than the private one. Yes, you read that right!

If you want to share files or send documents to a family member in your home on the same network or your home printer, you’ll need to have your network set to private.

ARE YOUR STEPS TOTALLY OFF FOR YOUR 2023 FITNESS GOALS?

When the network is set to private, your printer will recognize and connect to your computer to receive the documents you want to print. Clear as mud, right?

Let me summarize it again to be clear:

  • Private network: Use this setting only for networks you control or trust. When a network is set to private, your PC is discoverable to other devices on the network. You can use it for file and printer sharing.
  • Public network: Use this to connect to public networks, such as airport or hotel Wi-Fi. Your PC will be hidden from other devices on the network.

Did you know your printer can be a gateway for hackers to wreak havoc? Here are five ways to lock down your printer.
