Apple CEO Cook: Judge’s order to decrypt shooter’s iPhone is more than an encryption issue

A court order for Apple to help the FBI carry out a brute-force attack on the iPhone used by shooters in last year’s San Bernardino terrorist attack would set a precedent with broad implications, experts say.

For one, it could mean that in the future makers of encryption products might have to modify them to meet similar orders if they can’t otherwise access the encrypted data they contain. This raises the concern of privacy advocates who say encryption is important not only to protect personal data but also to safeguard transactions and industrial secrets.

On the flip side, if the order is overturned, it could leave law enforcement without a tool it desperately wants until a federal law passes that clearly spells out that product manufacturers must be able to meet the demands of such orders. Given the contentious nature of federal politics this year, that could be a long process.

Hacking Slack to keep your house in order

Earlier this month, a Swedish developer named Peter Fjallstrom wrote a blog post explaining how he used a few scripts to turn Slack, everybody’s favorite new collaboration app, into a tool that helps keep track of his kids, calendar, and even improves the grocery shopping process.

Judge does not order Apple to disable security on encrypted device

Well, well, well…a federal magistrate of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York has so far refused to order Apple to disable security on a customer’s encrypted mobile device even though the government assured the judge that doing so “is not likely to place any unreasonable burden on Apple.”

According to the court document (pdf), available on Cryptome which recently admitted to a leaking users’ IP addresses in a separate tech drama, the government filed a sealed application on Oct. 8; it asked the court “to issue an order pursuant to the All Writs Act,” and thereby force Apple “to assist in the execution of a federal search warrant by disabling the security of an Apple device that the government has lawfully seized pursuant to a warrant issued by this court. Law enforcement agents have discovered the device to be locked, and have tried and failed to bypass the lock.”
