HSB Cyber Survey Finds Electric Vehicles Drive Data Security Fears


HARTFORD, Conn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Mar 2, 2022–

Small business owners are adding electric vehicles to their service fleets, a survey released today by HSB reports, but they worry about cyber security when connecting them to public charging stations.

The HSB poll conducted by Zogby Analytics found 15 percent of small and medium-size businesses had leased or purchased electric vehicles (EVs) for commercial use.

Three-quarters (76 percent) of those business owners and managers were concerned EV charging stations could be a target for hackers, ransomware, and other cyber-attacks.

“The technology is advancing swiftly and there is a growing need to focus on the cyber security of electric vehicles,” said Timothy Zeilman, vice president for HSB, part of Munich Re. “With the rush to make the switch to electric cars and trucks, owners and the EV industry should step up their efforts to protect vehicles and charging infrastructure from cyber-attacks.”

EV Chargers Could Add to Cyber Risks

The plug-in electric chargers communicate with vehicles through an internet connection and security experts warn the systems could be hacked.

These potential threats add to the concerns of small business owners, who were already worried about the cyber security of their commercial vehicles.

The HSB survey found almost half (46 percent) were somewhat or very concerned about the cyber exposures and safety of internet connected and automated vehicles.

Commercial Vehicles Vulnerable to Attacks

When asked about their own experience, 13 percent of the business owners and managers said that at some point, a computer virus, hacking incident, or other cyber-attack had damaged or otherwise affected their commercial vehicles.

Overall, 44 percent of those responding to the poll said they fear that malware, or another cyber-attack will damage or destroy their vehicles’ data, software, or operating systems.

Most of them (56 percent) are somewhat or very concerned their vehicles could be immobilized or made inoperable, their safety compromised (54 percent), and that a hacker could communicate and confront them over their audio system (43 percent).

Consumers Prioritize Protection Over Convenience in McAfee 2022 Trends Survey | News

McAfee’s 2022 Global Trends Study, released today, reveals U.S. consumers’ greater perceived risk of exposure to online threats for individuals and family members, and a corresponding desire to invest in online protection. These findings come as more consumers shift their daily lives online, with greater use of internet banking, more investment in virtual assets, and a proliferation of online activities due to COVID-19.

“Almost every aspect of our lives now intersects the digital world. This requires greater levels of information to be shared with an increasing number of applications and organizations through the Internet. Safeguarding this information requires a combination of strong security architecture of applications along with good user hygiene, such as strong passwords and multi factor authentication,” said McAfee’s Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Steve Grobman. “The potential loss of sensitive personal information is a major concern for our customers and their families. A reoccurring theme throughout the survey was a shift to being fully protected over other benefits such as convenience and cost. This emphasis on strong protection is particularly acute in healthcare, for which 69% of respondents opted to keep their information private and secure, over utilization of new capabilities like AI.

Survey: Mobile Users Want Vendors To Focus on In-App, On-Device Security


A recent survey of mobile users found a majority want app publishers to ensure high levels of in-app and on-device security.  

 

The survey, How CISOs Can Meet Consumer Expectations of Mobile Security in 2021, includes response from some 10,000 mobile users worldwide.  It was commissioned by Appdome, a provider of a no-code mobile security and development platform.

 

“I think the biggest takeaway is that the vast majority of consumers are NOT willing to trade features for weak functionality, “ Appdome CEO Tom Tovar told IDN. 

 

“According to the data, roughly two-thirds of consumers value mobile app security as much or more than they do features. This means that what CISOs and security professionals have been saying for years has strong support from consumers: Mobile apps must be secure,” he added.

 

Tovar adds that the survey presents data that “flips the script” on conventional thinking about mobile apps  – in other words, no longer are new features worth compromising on security.  The survey is “making it clear that mobile app security and malware protection are on par with other critical features in the mobile app experience demanded by [consumers]” Tovar added.  

The survey results also provide CISOs “key insights into which mobile app threats consumers fear most,” Tovar said. Noted.

Among the most notable findings are:

 

Finding #1; Many consumers feel quite strongly about the need for mobile security

73% would stop using a mobile app if it left them unprotected against attack
74% would stop using a mobile app if their app was breached or hacked

Nearly half (46%) said they “would tell their friends to stop using an app if their app was [breached] or hacked,” the survey reported.

 

Finding #2: Most consumers value security and malware protection as much — or more – as the latest, greatest features. This is in sharp contrast to the view of mobile app developers and publishers, who often say providing consumers the best features is most important — even if they have to sacrifice security.
