International SOS Launches Digital Learning on Information Security and Privacy for Mobile Workers

LONDON–()–To further support International SOS’ ongoing work in helping organisations meet their Duty of Care responsibilities International SOS has launched a new learning module, Information Security and Privacy for Mobile Workers, within its Digital Learning Portfolio (DLP).

The International SOS Digital Learning Portfolio is continually evolving and growing to support organisations in navigating the ever-changing global mobility landscape. This new course is designed to help employees understand the critical role that they play in reducing the likelihood of an information security breach while on-the-move.

The course content provides examples of:

  • the different methods used by cybercriminals when trying to gain access to networks and devices,
  • guidance on how to stay protected against these methods, and
  • how to prepare workforces for potential threats whilst outside the workplace.

International SOS created this new elearning module in collaboration with the BSI Digital trust Consulting Services team. It has been designed to equip workforces with the knowledge they need to protect their valuable data and stay secure by practicing safe online behaviour.

Laurent Fourier, CEO, Health & Security Subscription Services commented: “We are living in a world where many of us depend on digital services more than ever and this dependance comes with an element of risk, particularly during mobility. Organisations are now being held increasingly accountable for their Duty of Care responsibilities towards employees by investors and clients alike and rightly so. This new elearning module has been designed to enhance the support we already provide to our clients to help them protect their workforce by equipping their employees with the right knowledge and skills to keep them safe from cybercrime whilst being mobile.”

Mark Brown, Global Managing Director, Digital trust Consulting, BSI commented: “We were delighted to be able to collaborate with International SOS on this project. For over 120 years BSI, as the UK National Standards body, has led the way in developing and implementing best practice. We are delighted to be able to merge BSI’s digital trust…

FDNY seeks firewall to stop doxxing of workers’ personal data

The FDNY is seeking to build a digital firewall to protect the Big Apple’s thousands of rescue workers from cyberattacks, including “doxxing,” The Post has learned.

The department recently put out a call in the City Record for consultant services “for the development and implementation of protective strategies to address the cyber threat of doxxing and to provide resiliency for the security of personal information.”

Doxxing is the publishing of personal information on the internet with the intent to bully, harass or threaten others.

The sick practice has become increasingly prevalent online. A radical pro-choice group recently doxxed six Supreme Court justices to spur protesters into showing up outside their homes to oppose overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling legalizing abortion.

An FDNY spokesman said the move to increase cybersecurity wasn’t triggered by a doxxing incident involving one of the city’s Bravest. But the department has enormous databases with the personal information of its 15,000 emergency responders and other workers — as well as retirees and patients it treats responding to 911 calls — that could be vulnerable to cyberattacks.

The search for the consultant is “part of the FDNY’s ongoing cybersecurity preparedness measures to protect the department’s data,” spokesman Frank Dwyer said.

Mayor Adams and Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh took part in the FDNY Medal Day ceremony at City Hall.
The FDNY has databases containing the personal information of approximately 15,000 members, according to a spokesman.

The selected cybersecurity pro would help implement anti-hack software and develop a training program for a workforce that interacts regularly with the public, the note to potential bidders says.

“The service should provide real time threat mitigation and recovery capabilities in the event of access to and misappropriation of personally identifiable data during the course of official duties as a member of the FDNY,” reads the note from the department.

One union leader representing FDNY responders said the solicitation to bolster firewall cybersecurity shows the department is behind the times in guarding against data breaches.

U.S. Warns Against Unintentionally Hiring North Korean IT Workers

Connection to WMDs and missile programs

The advisory said North Korean IT workers are tapping into the demand for IT skills to get freelance contracts in North America, Europe, and East Asia. And in many cases, the workers circumvent hiring restrictions by representing themselves as U.S.-based or non-North Korean teleworkers – or hide their identities and location by sub-contracting work to non-North Koreans.

They target opportunities across a wide gamut of specialities including mobile applications, mobile games, building virtual currency exchange platforms and digital coins, graphic animation, artificial intelligence-related applications, hardware and firmware development, and database development and management.

The “vast majority of them are subordinate to and working on behalf of entities directly involved in DPRK’s WMD and ballistic missile programs, as well as its advanced conventional weapons development and trade sectors. This results in revenue…being used by the DPRK to develop its WMD and ballistic programs, in violation of U.S. and UN sanctions,” the advisory said.

“Although DPRK IT workers normally engage in non-malicious IT work, such as the development of a virtual currency exchange or a website, they have used the privileged access gained as contractors to enable DPRK’s malicious cyber intrusions. Some overseas-based DPRK IT workers have provided logistical support to DPRK-based malicious cyber actors, although the IT workers are unlikely to be involved in malicious cyber activities themselves. DPRK IT workers may share access to virtual infrastructure, facilitate sales of data stolen by DPRK cyber actors, or assist with the DPRK’s money-laundering and virtual currency transfers.”
