Why Accenture’s New Security Chief Aims To Hire More Non-IT Workers To Combat Cybercrime

Even though he already has 16,000 employees under his command, Paolo Dal Cin, the new chief of Accenture’s global cybersecurity business, knows he’ll need more people to combat the ever-growing threat of cyberattacks.

But Dal Cin, formerly Accenture’s cybersecurity chief for Europe, says fighting cybercriminals isn’t just about technology. It’s also about understanding the mindset of cybercriminals.

So Dal Cin, who took command of Accenture’s global security business on May 1, said he wants to hire more non-IT people, such as criminologists and social scientists, to help in the battle against cyber-attackers.

“What we want to do is not to just hire more, but to hire more diverse talent,” Dal Cin said in a recent wide-ranging interview with CRN.

“Security is becoming more multidisciplinary. We want to involve people that (are) studying social sciences. We’d like to have more criminologists. We’d like to add people with a different background. When you are doing a threat analysis, it is very important to understand the threat-actor mindset. This is not just about technical skills. It is more also about soft skills. So we want to diversify our talent pool.”

He added: “Looking forward, we want to attract people not just from, you know, engineering or computer science degree, but from a much broader talent pool.”

And Dal Cin, who is based in Milan, Italy, and who has worked at Accenture since 2003, said he also wants to hire more personnel with deep knowledge of specific industries, in order to better understand the security needs of large enterprise and other clients.

“We’d like to have also more people really dig into specific industries,” Dal Cin said. “Protecting a national critical infrastructure like a utility company is quite different from protecting a banking institution. They have different goals (and needs) in security in order to protect their value chains. Bronx T-Mobile store workers use merchandise security tags to help NYPD track and arrest armed robber in Manhattan – New York Daily News

Traceable electronic security tags on merchandise stolen from a Bronx cell phone store helped cops track down an armed robber after a wild chase Saturday on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, police said.

Two armed men ransacked a T-Mobile location on E. 149 St. near Union Ave. in Woodstock about 3:20 p.m., cops said.

One of the men fled on foot while the other drove off with the stolen goods in a gray BMW.

Quick-thinking store employees began tracking the stolen electronics through security tags the thieves overlooked, police said.

Aided by the store workers and the trackers, cops followed the trail to the Upper East Side, where they soon found the BMW.

When they tried to pull over the car at E. 96 St. and Third Ave., the driver hit the gas, ramming a police vehicle as he tried to escape.

The crook made it just three blocks east when responding officers stopped the BMW on the southbound FDR Drive at E. 96 St.

The suspect ditched the BMW, ran one block up the highway, and tossed something into the East River before cops put him under arrest.

One of the arresting officers injured his wrist during the struggle.

The robber’s name and charges against him were not immediately released. His partner in crime was still being sought late Saturday.

The NYPD’s Harbor Unit and Aviation Unit were searching for the object he threw in the water Saturday evening.

IT workers believe ransomware is as serious as terrorism

Businesses and governments around the world continue to be plagued by ransomware and the problem has gotten so bad that some now believe that ransomware threats are equivalent to terrorism.

To learn more about how InfoSec leadership is responding to the growing risk of ransomware attacks, the cybersecurity firm Venafi surveyed 1,506 IT security officers across the US, UK, Germany, France, Benelux and Australia.

The survey found that ransomware attacks increased by 93 percent in the first half of last year alone when compared to the same time period in 2020. To make matters worse, data from Cybersecurity Ventures revealed that by the end of last year, an organization was estimated to be hit with a ransomware attack every 11 seconds.

In June of last year, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) said that the agency would begin treating ransomware attacks at the same level it previously reserved only for terrorism. FBI Director Christopher Wray echoed this sentiment and went so far as to compare ransomware attacks to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Venafi found that overall, 60 percent of InfoSec leaders agree with the DOJ’s decision to prioritize ransomware threats at the same level as terrorism according to a new report from the cybersecurity firm detailing the findings of its survey.

To pay or not to pay

Of those surveyed, 67 percent of respondents from organizations with over 500 employees reported falling victim to a ransomware attack last year. However, that figure rose to 80 percent among respondents at organizations with 3,000 to 4,999 employees.

Venafi’s report also found that eight percent of the companies that did suffer a ransomware attack last year paid a ransom to their attackers. At the same time though, 22 percent of respondents said that they believe it is morally wrong to pay a ransom even if an attack seriously compromises critical business data or systems.

One of the reasons that some organizations opt to pay their attackers is due to the fact that ransom payments don’t have to be publicly disclosed even under this year’s new National Defense Authorization Act.
