Apex mother encourages vaccines among young adults after losing her 20-year-old son to COVID :: WRAL.com

— Tyler Gilreath, a 20-year-old student at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, battled coronavirus for three weeks in August. He was starting to recover and moved into a new apartment.

But soon after feeling better, he developed a sinus infection that became so severe he had to be hospitalized.

“You never know how COVID-19 is going to affect you individually,” said his mother, Tamara Demello, from Apex. “It seems like it finds your weakest point and attacks that.”

The infection cut off blood flow to his brain, and just after five days in the hospital, Gilreath’s family had to take him off life support.

“It gets really serious really fast and it can just as easily kill you,” she said.

Now, Demello is trying to make sure no one else has to go through the same pain as she has. Her story has been featured in a national commercial from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“If this can happen to my son, who was athletic and never sick and totally healthy with no pre-existing issues, this can happen to anybody,” Demello said.

Gilreath wanted to get married and be a dad. He was attending UNCW for computer science in hopes of working in cyber security and pursuing his interest in music.

Demello said she understands that “young men can be pretty stubborn when doing what their moms tell them to.” Her son thought that he was invincible, and that the virus wouldn’t affect him, so he didn’t get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“We need to be armed and prepared as much as we can,” she said. “This is a battle.”

Data from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services show just 55% of people ages 18 to 24 are vaccinated. . That’s only 6% more than were vaccinated six months ago.

As of Friday, only 38% of all North Carolina children ages 5 to 17 are vaccinated against the coronavirus with at least one dose.

“The statistics are very low for young people to die from this, but the parent who loses the child doesn’t care about the statistics,” Demello said.

Demello said that her life will never be the same after losing her son.

Man Robbed of 16 Bitcoin Sues Young Thieves’ Parents – Krebs on Security

In 2018, Andrew Schober was digitally mugged for approximately $1 million worth of bitcoin. After several years of working with investigators, Schober says he’s confident he has located two young men in the United Kingdom responsible for developing a clever piece of digital clipboard-stealing malware that let them siphon his crypto holdings. Schober is now suing each of their parents in a civil case that seeks to extract what their children would not return voluntarily.

In a lawsuit filed in Colorado, Schober said the sudden disappearance of his funds in January 2018 prompted him to spend more than $10,000 hiring experts in the field of tracing cryptocurrency transactions. After months of sleuthing, his investigators identified the likely culprits: Two young men in Britain who were both minors at the time of the crime.

A forensic investigation of Schober’s computer found he’d inadvertently downloaded malicious software after clicking a link posted on Reddit for a purported cryptocurrency wallet application called “Electrum Atom.” Investigators determined that the malware was bundled with the benign program, and was designed to lie in wait for users to copy a cryptocurrency address to their computer’s temporary clipboard.

When Schober went to move approximately 16.4 bitcoins from one account to another — by pasting the lengthy payment address he’d just copied — the malware replaced his bitcoin payment address with a different address controlled by the young men.

Schober’s lawsuit lays out how his investigators traced the stolen funds through cryptocurrency exchanges and on to the two youths in the United Kingdom. In addition, they found one of the defendants — just hours after Schober’s bitcoin was stolen — had posted a message to GitHub asking for help accessing the private key corresponding to the public key of the bitcoin address used by the clipboard-stealing malware.

Investigators found the other defendant had the malware code that was bundled with the Electrum Atom application in his Github code library.

Initially, Schober hoped that the parents of the thieving teens would listen to reason, and simply return the money. So he wrote a…

Young Zambians hope for brighter future as Hichilema wins vote | Elections News

Lusaka, Zambia – As Zambia’s opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema was proclaimed victor of the presidential elections on Sunday, the Zambian capital, Lusaka, erupted in celebrations that lasted late into the night as supporters sung, danced and waved his party’s flags.

Hichilema, 59, of the United Party for National Development (UPND) won by a landslide 2.8 million votes, trailed by incumbent Edgar Lungu’s 1.8 million ballots.

The turnout in the August 12 general election was the highest since the 1991 ballot when Zambia held its first multiparty elections, with those below 40 years of age constituting more than half the electorate.

After the celebrations, street sweeper Joseph Phiri, 28, collected rubbish at the independence roundabout and scraped away tattered posters of Lungu from walls.

Like many younger Zambians, Phiri hopes the election of a new leader will see an end to growing authoritarianism in the country and to better economic prospects.

Under Lungu, who came to power in 2015, the authorities were often criticised for the suppression of freedom of expression, assembly and association.

Phiri remembers the running battles between the police and protesters when he became a street cleaner in the capital, two years ago.

“Whenever people came here to protest they would be quickly arrested, there was no peace. Everyone would be chased by the police even if you were working, it’s like we were being controlled by the police and there was no freedom for anyone. I hope it will be different now,” he told Al Jazeera.

As the sweeper cleared away the litter of an intense presidential campaign, droves of motorists whizzed past hooting and chanting “Forward! Forward!”, the slogan of the UPND.

Many of the red-clad supporters hope Hichilema, popularly known as HH, will usher in an era of greater freedom and prosperity.

Lungu has rejected the result, saying the election was not free and fair and alleging electoral violence in three provinces which culminated in the alleged murder of a candidate for the ruling Patriotic Front.

Officials from the UPND dismissed Lungu’s statement as people “trying to throw out the entire election just to cling on to their…
