TCL Rolls Out January 2022 Security Update To Its Google TV Devices

TCL has released a new software update to its Google TV-powered televisions. The company hasn’t published a detailed release note online, so it could be a minor update. A one-line release note on the TV itself mentions “optimize product experience and performance improvements,” which is a generic pointer for almost every software update. But considering the recent issues TCL’s 5-Series and 6-Series TVs have had, these optimizations and performance improvements could go a long way in improving the user experience.

According to 9to5Google, who first reported this rollout, the new software package doesn’t bring any “immediately noticeable” difference to the user experience. However, they have spotted that their TCL TV has been updated to the January 2022 Android security patch. It is the latest available SMR (security maintenance release) available currently. So the TCL TVs are now some of the most up-to-date Google TV devices in the market.

Of course, television sets don’t require as frequent security updates as your smartphone. Google itself doesn’t seem to care too much about security updates for its Chromecast with Google TV, releasing a new patch every six months or so. But it’s still nice to see TCL setting a bold precedent. Perhaps these small things are what set its devices apart from the competition, helping it sell more than ten million Google TV and Android TV devices in a year.

TCL had released a major software update to its Google TV devices last month

As mentioned before, TCL’s 5-Series and 6-Series TVs had a wide variety of issues early on. Users reported a buggy and sluggish experience, with a general lag in response. There were also other issues such as apps crashing and devices freezing, forcing users to unplug the TV. The problems were so grave that TCL temporarily stopped selling the TVs. Third-party retailers such as Best Buy also removed the listings for the TCL 5-Series and 6-Series TVs.

The company last month released a software update to fix those issues. It soon resumed the sales as well. Now, it is rolling out another update to further polish the software.

If you own any of TCL’s Google TV models, you should receive the latest update…

Live from Long Island: Northport radio station rolls out round-the-clock coverage on cyber crime

WCYB, an online radio station covering cybercriminals and digital defenders worldwide, debuted Thursday from Long Island.

The Northport station, a unit of 6-year-old Cybersecurity Ventures, is the first to offer round-the-clock coverage of online breaches 365 days a year, said founder Steven C. Morgan.

“There are dozens, if not hundreds, of cybersecurity podcasts,” he said. “But launching and operating a full-blown radio station is entirely different. It’s a heavy lift to get up and running and staff.”

The station, dubbed Cybercrime Radio, at https://cybersecurityventures.com/radio/, began webcasting at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The station’s first broadcast day included a recorded interview with Kevin Mitnick, whose exploits as a hacker were chronicled in books and movies.

Mitnick, now chief hacking officer at KnowBe4 Inc., a Clearwater, Florida, computer security company, eluded an FBI dragnet until his arrest and 1999 guilty plea on wire fraud and computer fraud charges.

In the interview, Mitnick described a hack as a 16-year-old, when he commandeered the drive-up communications system at a McDonald’s, lampooning customers and managers.

Paul Trapani, president of the Long Island Software & Technology Network (LISTnet), said threats posed by hackers are creating “a huge demand” for the kind of content offered by WCYB.

Cybersecurity is “starting to evolve as its own industry,” he said, with many companies adding the position of chief information security officer.

Morgan said that damages from cyberintrusions will cost $6 trillion…

Apple rolls out fix for WebKit security issue

Apple has released a security patch for iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches to fix an issue under active attack by hackers.

The security patch is available with iOS 14.4.2 and iPadOS 14.4.2 updates which cover older devices as well as with watchOS 7.3.3 update for Apple Watches.

The vulnerability has been found with Apple’s WebKit, the browser engine that is users in the Safari browser across all Apple devices.

Describing the impact of the vulnerability, Apple wrote on its support page, “Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to universal cross-site scripting.”

“Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited,” it said.

The issue was reported by Clement Lecigne of Google Threat Analysis Group and Billy Leonard of Google Threat Analysis Group. It was addressed by “improved management of object lifetimes.”

Fix for the vulnerability CVE-2021-1879 is available for iPhone 6s and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and iPod touch (7th generation).

The watchOS update is available for Apple Watch Series 3 and later.

Apple has not specified if and how any users were impacted by the issue or if the attack was a wider attack or targeted against a small number of users.

The tech giant released a fix for similar issues with WebKit earlier this month (via TechCrunch).

It had released patches for a “memory corruption issue” with the browser engine.

The vulnerabilities were reported by Google and Microsoft researchers.

Google rolls out Android 12 developer preview 1.1 to address bugs and issues

Google has started releasing a minor update for its Android 12 developer preview ‘1.1’ to address some bugs and early issues found by app developers.

It brings improvements in several areas like privacy, security, battery life, and performance.

The new build is rolling out over-the-air for those who have the previous one installed, and it’s a small 5MB download, reports GSMArena.

Android 12 Developer Preview 1.1 fixes a number of things like the issue of intermittent disconnections from WiFi even when a signal is strong. Some devices display a “System UI keeps stopping” message, that has been fixed already.

Other issues fixed are as follows: partial wake locks causing excessive battery drain, unresponsive fingerprint reader, Settings app crashing if a user accesses app notification settings, system UI freezing after the device is updated, some devices rebooting intermittently, and devices rebooting after a user unlocks the device using a PIN.

The new developer preview also offers pre-release APIs for developers. It has passed preliminary testing and will still be improved over time.
